Tooth with only one root

I had a tooth pulled today and the dentist was very puzzled over why it had only one root - he showed me the x-ray and then again when it was out. He asked if all of my teeth as a child had fallen out - that's something I couldn't answer, since it happened many years ago! I've had one tooth pulled before, back when I was a teenager, and it had the full four roots. Due to my being on growth hormone injections when I was young, all four roots were quite long - same with the one in the tooth pulled today.

Just out of curiousity, does anyone know why a tooth would develop only a single root? The dentist was fairly confused!
