As it says on the tin - word processing as well as some gaming - world of warcraft, Total war etc. Budget is around 450-500.

Any ideas? I know nothing about specs etc

    Fujitsu 15.6" laptop with a Core i5 3210M, 4 GB RAM and a 320 GB HDD, €467 @ LD.ie

They also have a few Core i5 with more RAM and bigger HDD for less than 500 yoyos, but this is the only one with an Ivy Bridge processor, meaning it has Intel HD 4000 graphics. With your budget, you can forget about dedicated graphics, however, HD 4000 is good enough to play most games at low/medium settings. If you want more RAM, upgrade it yourself, an 8 GB kit (2x4) costs 35 yoyos.

Thanks, that looks good, but how would I upgrade the ram? buy it and bring it to some computer shop to get them to upgrade it? would that not void the warranty?

Open the service hatch at the bottom and replace the memory modules (probably 2x2 GB by default), simple as that. Of course, if you're not comfy with that, you may go to a computer store and buy the RAM there, it will cost a little bit more but they'll fit it for you.

According to Crucial's upgrade advisor, this model can take up to 16 GB RAM (2x8 GB).

No, upgrading the memory or the HDD to SSD will not void the warranty. Of course, new parts will not be covered by Fujitsu. They'll be covered by a separate warranty from the vendor/manufacturer.

Sounds like something I could do I've replaced HDs before no bother, this sounds like a similar job. Thanks, you've been very helpful. I see they offer the option to upgrade to windows eight, worth doing? Had vista for a bit but went back to XP... don't wanna suffer useless tech like vista again

€15 voucher? Yeah, I'd take them up on the offer and grab the license. You can still install it later, when a service pack is available to iron out the bugs.

46 yoyos for a 3 yr warranty isn't too bed either.

Had a look at various sites of bricks and mortar shops, which I'd prefer, and comparable laptops all seem to be well over 500, ld's deal seems top notch.
How long do they usually take to deliver?

Bought this laptop, arrived today... problems already. :(

Start it up, get a "beep" and:

00C08280: 0280 Fan Error has occurred.

    Press F1 To Continue

If I press f1 boot continues as normal. I don't know if the fan works, I'm afraid to leave the laptop on too long in case it overheats and gets damaged.

Needless to say this is very annoying. I'm going to call fujitsu tomorrow when I have credit, but can anyone reccomend some action to take? Might be a simple problem, easily fixed... (I hope)

Run SpeedFan. Monitors the temperature sensor and will let you control the fan speed.

    And contact tech support ASAP.

Installed that there and as far as I can see it doesn't detect any fan, temps started to rise so I shut it off. Fooking joke.

Fan seems to be broken, arrange for RMA immediately.

That's what it looks like alright. Gonna get it sorted tomorrow, would I be quicker going through laptopsdirect or should I go straight to the manufacturer?

    Talk to LD first

Problem seems to be fixed, lad on the phone said to go into the bios and restore the default settings, seems to have done the trick, is working flawlessly since I did it yesterday morning. I'm monitoring the temps etc and it stays in a healthy 45 - 60 degree area.

Many thanks for all the help Torqay, the laptop is exactly what I wanted. Very good value, quite impressed with the processor. Doesn't look like I need to increase the RAM, but I'll see how it goes.

    I owe you a pint! :D
