Triax 114 HDD Problems

Forgive my stupidity but surely a 3.0 usb drive can operate at 2.0 speeds (if only connected to a 2.0 port)

Does anyone know that this is true?
Is there a list of external 2.5 drive that do work with the unit.
Looking for something in the 1TB range.
