    Has anyone owned or driven one of these? Thoughts on reliability, MPG, performance, etc...

    Might visit this lad who is selling one.

    Thanks.

    Sold a clutch kit & dmf for one the other day, think it was around the €650 mark...

    I drove a Ghia X with the same engine as a hire car once. Performance is decent but the engine has a narrow power band which is very noticeable when accelerating through the gears.

    To be honest I would prefer the 2.0 TDCi (128 hp) in those old Mondeos. It still performs OK as it has only a shade less torque than the 2.2 and doesn't drop out of its power band on every upshift, handles OK, and a standard Mondeo rides more comfortably than ST/Ghia X models which have big rims and sports suspension.

    A friend of mine had one in black and I drove it back from Galway back to Dublin once.

    It looked great from the outside but was a bit disappointed with the interior, even with the black half-leather seats. His was an 06 and I would prefer my 02 Audi A4's interior, the ST just didn't have that premium feel. I mean its not a bad interior but I just didnt feel like i was sitting in anything special.

    Performance wise the ST is nothing special either, but credit where credit is due, the in gear performance once on a motorway is decent, which is probably down to the 6 speed gearbox. It feels very planted and effortless even at very high speed.

    Getting back into my A4 I really did miss having that 6th gear.

    Another friend of mine has an IS220d and it is far superior in every way.

    Looks better, muuuuuch nicer interior, more powerfull, feels sportier and drives better imo

    153 bhp from a 2.2 is fairly crap.

    €9k seems a very optimystic asking price.

    Here is a similar cheaper one with lower mileage:

    I had my ST TDCI for the past 3.5yrs. Got if from a main dealer in the UK.

    In the meantime I got it re-mapped and decat so pushing out approx 190bhp. Still returns 50mpg + with careful driving. It's a comfy car and great for eating the miles. In gear performs is great. First and second are limited to protect the gearbox from the high torque. So if you like racing of the line, look for another car. These cars are design for delivering it's power in 3rd gear and above, making driving enjoyable.

    It has plenty of toys, auto lights, wipers and climate control, heated seats, CC. I think they look the job. The body kit isn't in your face but certainly different from the normal Mondeo. The wheels look good.

    Some bad points;
    2.2 = high tax
    The rear bumper doesn't have foam supports and will sag/drop. Most owners put in self tapping screws as a fix.
    EGR valve will last 2yrs at best.
    Aux tensioner fails. This will lead to a whoo noise on idle. Once you apply any load on the engine, it will go away. The belt is simply flapping due to the reduced tension on it. Does no harm to the engine but the noise can get worse. Looking at around €300 for the parts and labour.
    The lacquer on alloys fail.
    I understand the injectors give trouble. I have no experienced this myself.

    Regarding the car you linked to, some comments.
    These cars do not have a LSD. With that mileage, service history is needed. Remember it is an import. Ford never released these cars in Ireland.
    If you get the VIN number, you can check the date of manufacture and any extra's the car got from a Ford website.

    Had a 2005 one for just over a year, UK import. Broke my heart TBH and lost my shirt on it when I sold it for cash.

    My advice is go over it with a fine tooth comb although most of the things that went wrong with mine (clutch, flywheel and injectors) could happen at any time.

    If you do go for it, hope you have better luck with it than mine.

    Went back to Kerry to drive one and enjoy the drive. But, I think I'll get bored of it after a while. I also drove a 2009 Audi A4 TDi S-Line and love it, handled very well around the country roads and it's a nice place to be in. Will definitely look into them more now.

    I'm a bit surprised that you would find an A4 more interesting than the ST. Was the A4 quottro?

    Have 1 now for 2.5 years, can't complain about it to be honest.
    Bought in UK from dealer also. 2006 version. 110k miles on mine now;

    Has all the toys, comfortable enough to drive, sitting around 48mpg most of the time, but thats on non motorway roads, with a trip Galway each day.

    Good points, economy, parts are cheap and got a pedal to pass out if needed.

    Bad points, alloys are pants, have had 2 cracked ones already and one of the wheels has paint peel which is very common on these.
    Replaced the EGR valve myself (50 euro from Traynors), no issue with the injectors on mine, but this is common on these engines.
    Tensioner is an annoyance for sure, but no harm.
    Road tax is a dog, but you don't "mind" if you really like the car.

    Nothing special in 1st and 2nd, but 3rd and 4th have a kick, on the motorway they have a good pull and you will find them comfortable.

    Owned an A4 for 3 years which had all the bells in the interior, so the interior on the ST is a little bland, get the recaro seats if you can find them, the ST is a far better car with regards performance than the A4.

    Outside of that I can't think of anything else. Fit a house in the book! Cheap for parts.

    Good luck with the drive, it will take a few drives to get "used" to it, but I find it sound now, had a Mazda 6 MPS before that, so it was a fair drop to go down to the diesel, but the MPG eased my pain! :D
