I have a cow that is calved 5 days and still has not cleaned (there hanging from her) and starting to smell.

Is there anything I can give her to make her clean or should I get her washed??

you never pull cleanings, if you are not familiar with taking cleanings get your vet/ai man to handle her , if you pull the cleanings it can cause damage inside, when the apple is ripe it will fall... dont tie a knot or a weight on them either:rolleyes:

Give her a bit of Ivy. Old cure.

If there is a smell there is infection so maybe a bottle of pen & strep for 3-4 days. Only problem with this is it will kill the bacteria that will eventually hopefully drop the cleaning also. Would not go pulling hard on it, if its not ready to come with a light pull then leave it, could easily do damage inside. After 7-8 days get a vet to take it and wash her out. Keep a close eye on her though because if she gets sick she will need to be seen pretty quick.

Going to need veterinary advice/prescription to get the pen-strep anyway, so the vet will be involved one way or the other.

I've heard if you tie a small weight (eg a horse shoe or a bottle of water) to the cleanings it can help. It provides a gentle yet constant pull on it.

Chances are your going to get the VET out anyway, why not get the VET now and they can remove the cleaning and wash out the cow...
Its been a bad enough year all round without leaving a cow that won't hold in calf next time for months on end...

Our vet mentioned in the past that retained cleanings is a sign of Selenium diffeciency and perhaps that the cow didn't get sufficient pre-calving minerals.. She also said that farmers need to accept that ground in Ireland is low in selenium so cattle rarely have their required ammount without additional supplementation..

More often than not, there's a scientific reason behind these old cures. Ivy is propably rich in some mineral. In the old days breasfeeding women used cabbage leaves for sore nipples. Turns out cabbage is high in oestrogen.

Keep them well stocked in the pre calving minerals and this should reduce the instance of retained cleanings dramatically - which isn't much use to the OP now

Going to be a vet job i'd say

Our own Vet told me to leave a cow 9 days before doing anything, with retained cleanings. Thankfully I never had to wait that long, they came of thier own accord.
No matter now at this stage she will want to be washed out when she does clean.
