    Surely N11-M11-M50-N4-M4-M6?

Yeah, that's pretty much your only (sensible) option.

Definitely the only route - 3+ hours at most

Last time I checked, the M 4/M 6 still indeed go through the midlands ;)

If you mean is there a cross country route from Arklow avoiding the M 50 then that means cutting across the Wicklow mountains via Glendalough. Eventually, this will take you only as far as Hollywood or Blessington and then back to the M 50 or via Naas. If anything it's longer, less direct, slower, hillier and worse roads.

Back before the M6/4/50 was built I used to go
    Arklow-Aughrim-Tinahealy-Hacketstown-Carlow-Swan-Spink-Abbeyleix-Ballycolla-Borris-Roscrea-Birr-Riverstown-Portumna-Loughrea-Galway

On a very good day I may have done it in 3:15, but speed limits have been reduced on most of the way since. The Motorway via Dublin is the only way now, unless sightseeing
