I'm looking for ideas on how to increase unique hits for a website.

Obviously the main way is to constantly keep the website updated with material that interests your target market but what other 'gimmicks' have you seen sites use?

One example is to have a 'caption competition' where the website puts up a picture and invites visitors to leave a comment (along with their email address) that could be a suitable caption/headline for the image and the best one wins a small prize.

Anything similar that impressed you?
