    Hello,
I have a FIREBIRD ENVIROMAX C26 which is 6 years old. I was getting it serviced every year with local plumber until july 2011. He immigrated to oz. Its burns kerosene and i have 2 filter installed in system which were changed yearly. I get the fuel from same branded company and dont mind the price.

Last July I got a new enginner to service it. He changed a jet and left the old one. I was away but my wife said he seemed professinal and i paid €100. He is RGII registered and provided a print out of a flue gas analysis.
Readings on July 27th are as follows

    02% 2.6
    CO (PPM) 35
    CO2 (%) 13.6
    RATIO 0.0003
    PRESSURE (mBAR) 0.02
    TEMP NET (C) 26
    TEMP fLUE (C) 46
    EFF NET (%) 99.
    XS AIR (%) 14.2

The burner was being on for the last two weeks and the photocell is sooting up every 2 to 3 days. Thier seems to be alot of soot outside on wall also.

Really annoyed, Any ideas what i should do. I live in east galway and just want a proper job done.

Being RGII registered has absolutely nothing to do with oil boilers. The technician needs to be OFTEC certified.

The reason you are sooting up is the CO2 is way to high at 13.6% and the Excess Air is way to low at 14.2%. O2 should fall into place at approx 5.5%.

The boiler needs to be re-serviced as it will now be sooted and re-commissioned to approx 11.2 - 11.3% CO2. Excess air will therefore fall into place at approx 35%.

I would also downsize the nozzle from a 0.65 80ES to a 0.55 80ES or a 0.60 80ES nozzle, but up the oil pump pressure to approx 9.5bar. This will produce more force through the flame chamber and produce less sooting.

Also ensure that they leave the boiler running with all zones open for a bit longer before analysing as Firebird Environmax's normal flue gas temperature will be at about 70C and not 46C. This gives a slight bit of an inaccuracy with efficiency and is always best practice to allow the boiler to run at operating temperature before making adjustments to the combustion.

Amazing that the guy actually printed that out for you, obviously had no idea of what results he should have been looking for on the FGA.

No mention of a smoke pump either. I wouldn't stick my analizer into an oil boiler with out getting a smoke number. And that's from experience;)

    THANKS Shane 0007,
Most annoying thing is that it is worse now.

Where would i get a OFTEC certified engineer and get it done right

Ring Firebird on 026 - 45253 and ask for technical department. Ask them for a recommended OFTEC technician for your area. That way you are not taking a stab in the dark.

I had a similar service carried out recently and a nozzle was also changed. I am no engineer so would like a second opinion on my boiler test results too. Oil is too expense to be wasting it and ignoring faults with a boiler.

Shane - how can I also get in touch with OFTEC certified engineer in Galway that wont waste my time?

    Thanks.

Thanks Shane for that number above - posted a reply without seeing yours!

Will call them and see what to do next based on the test results.

Just make sure they downsize the nozzle & up the pump pressure & analyise to suit. The extra pump pressure will compensate for any loss in output from the smaller nozzle but will ensure a cleaner burn. Also with normal condensing boilers, I would set them to 11.5% CO2 but with the Environmax being an upsy downsy boiler, it will give it a better chance from soothing if set slightly lower at 11.2 - 11.3%. If you have a windy site, a plume dispersal kit may be required if the products of combustion are being recycled through the air intake. This can easily be determined by any decent engineer.

if you have fga print out why not post results on here and im sure you will get
very good advice back if a problem is noticed

kellyjoe 4321 results were way off

yours may be ok so spending money on retest may not be necessary

Its tough sorting out the heating.
I put in new system in house 10 years ago firebird 150, and every year it breaks down, but last year I replaced the burner, and again its broken down. Ive spent in the region in 10 years of € 6000 getting it repaired or replacement parts for all of my heating system, expansion tank, immersion, Control valves ect.....I know where I went wrong, it was 10 years ago, and the guy I chose to put the system in.

Is there a rate my plumber site anywhere?

    €6,000 on repairs is ridiculous!
Rate my .... sites are a waste of time. The would be bordering legal territory at all times. Get referrals, recommendations, ask advice, use your gut. Does what they are saying make sense? If it does then 9/10 it will be correct.
