Subaru Forester Timing Belt Interval.

Just bought a 08 Subaru Forester 2.5 XT. (petrol)

Its done 87K Miles. I rang the dealer where it has been serviced all its life and they said its not had its Timing Belt done and that it needs to be done at 105K kms (66k miles). I nearly sh*t myself.

But then I checked this on the internet and have uncovered an interesting nugget on the Subaru forester forum

    http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f87/timing-belt-change-105k-km-europe-105k-miles-us-why-difference-116960/

Seems to be some confusion over whether the Timing Belt interval is

    105k miles (168k Kms) or 105k Kms (66k Miles).

Seems there might have been a misprint in the Service manual for Europe a couple of years back and nobody has ever admitted it. Garages will obviously take your money its a €500-600 job ..with the proviso that they are following the European manual and you are safer to do it now blah, blah

Anybody have any experience or knowledge of this ?

Yes, if the belt breaks, add a zero. Safe or sorry? That's the choice. Personally, I'd be changing the belt. MFRS seem to love overstating the change interval as it makes the cost of ownership appear lower to new buyers. This may be one of those engines where belt breakage is not really an issue that arises often, but if it was mine, i'd change it.:)

    Hi Pottler,

Subaru have a boxer horizontally opposed Engine .. apparently it will be destroyed if Timing Belt breaks :-(

The main dealer Garage did tell me that the Timing belts on them are tough. (Gates) and I found out that they have a recommended lifespan of (wait for it) 105k Miles.

This is all becoming too suspicious ;-)

I know, but the Boxer engines are also rorty enough and that belts been spinning there for 5 years now. Me, I'd change it, but then I tend to do the belt on everything I buy straight away, I just ignore the supposed history/reccomendations and start from scratch. I got that way from bitter experience:D
