I have been offered a job but they need me to start in one week.. the notice period in my current job is 6 weeks.. What are the implications if any if i just leave my current job by the end of this week?

Technically you would be breaching your contract if your employer did not agree to waive the notice period and you didn't serve the entire notice period. You'll need to decide yourself or with a legal professional if they're likely to sue you.

If you just up and leave, you can probably forget about a reference from them. That may not be a concern.

Personally I think I'd be slow to work for a company who don't respect if a candidate has a notice period. It's putting you in an awkward position and it's not being reasonable IMO.

How important a position do you currently hold?

Usually the more important the position the more likely they will put you on 'gardening leave' straight away.

Otherwise, maybe you have holidays etc?

Of course you could just tell them you are going to work for somebody else...its not a competitor is it? They might be awkward if it is
