Ikea chest of drawers

Not sure to post this in DIY or Consumer Issues. ...

Bought some malm furniture early this year and now some of the drawers won't open. The bottoms have popped out. We have popped them back in but they keep popping out.

My other half was very careful to assemble them as he is a perfectionist.
Anyone have any problems like this before and was it covered under the IKEA guarantee or does anyone know how to fix them properly?

I have one of these myself. The base can drop out if overloaded, but usually mine is fine.
I think they came with little fixings to support the base (white triangular plastic piece with screw through it. I just built a hemnes unit the other day that had these to supprot the drawers.
If you don't already have these under the drawers I would suggest getting some. Ikea have a vending machine beside the returns desk that dispenses all these little replacement pieces for furniture. From what I saw last time i was there, it costs €1 (which goes to charity) for any little bag of bits.

That, or just give Ikea a ring, tell them exavtly what you wrote here and see what the official advice is.

Hope you get it functioning properly

yep 1 euro for a bag of bits.

And 50 cents for an iced cup cake too.:D

When I mentioned these bits to the other half he said 'oh yeah there was a bag of tiny plastic bits with no instructions anywhere and I hadn't a clue what to do with them so I didn't open them".

Does anyone know how to fit these under the drawers or (I know I am probably asking too much) have a photo of how they should fit?

    I would be forever grateful.

I have the instructions here and I posted pics on how it all goes together too.

Have a search in the DIY section for my posts on Ikea wardrobes.:)

Just chekced Ikea assembly instructions. Looks like they have fancier supports now:
    Page 23 of This

I can't find an image of the little things i had in mind, or any images of how to fit them.
From what i remember the plastic is triangular shaped; sits in base on drawer base and side against the brawer back when drawer is upside down. Then screw goes in diagonally, through drawer base and into drawer back. - I think...

Sorry I can't help more. Will have a look at my one at home, although i did notice a base falling out of one of my drawers last week too :(

Sorry, just read that you said "drawer" and not wardrobe.

The small plastic triangular pieces go up against the back of the drawer and you screw it into the back of the drawer (in the middle) to hold the bottom/base of the drawer in place with the frame of the drawer itself.

I,ll post a pic later on,of the underside of the Ikea drawer,so you can see exactly how it goes together.:)

They have indeed replaced the small plastic retainer pieces with actual propper retainer brackets/braces now.

Image 23 shows them there in your PDF link.

    Looks much better now.:)

Here is how the plastic supports should be fitted; have to say the newer strap support looks like a better job altogether.

Thank you DavyD_83, Paddy147 and jack of all. I really appreciate your help.

Those corner plastic bits are the one's we have. Will fit those for now and try to get the new brackets/straps (part no 123833) as they look so much stronger.

    Thanks again.

I have found that gorilla glue used in the joints when assembling Flatpack furniture makes the job marginally slower but you will never have problems with drawers falling apart and the cams coming loose.

Doesn't gorilla glue expand / foam as it sets ?? If it's what I'm thinking of it's amazing stuff but you'd have to quite sparing with it and cut back /rub it back as it sets

It expands alright but if you wet the joint and are careful with the application its fine, better than PVA or similar and much faster setting.
If you get excess just wipe it off when wet or let it dry and scrape it off with a sharp knife.

I was starting to think I would never buy Ikea furniture again if it only lasts up to a year but then I got the actual replacement bars/brackets from Ikea for the bottom of the drawers. Hopefully they will stop them warping in future.

I just filled out the Ask Anna missing parts form on the website and they arrived in the post direct from Sweden.

The new braces to support the bottom of the drawers to prevent sagging (123833) and screws (105344) are available for free from IKEA customer support. They are a modification to the original product which makes up for the sagging drawer problem so prevalent on the original design.

To add the braces to the original product, you'll have to drill a couple holes for the screws. The instructions on page 23 (posted earlier) show how they go in. I found it not entirely clear though. You drill a hole 7/64" and put a screw in between the bottom edge of the front panel and the slot. Then you put the brace in and spin it 180 degrees, then slide the assembly back together. The brace will hang on that screw--it does not need to be fully tightened which is good because you wouldn't get a screw-driver in there easily after it is assembled. From there you can drill a hole in the back of the drawer for the long tab of the brace. This one can be tightened.

This brace makes a HUGE difference in the strength of the bottom drawer. It eliminates the sagging drawer problem. I am retrofitting all of my drawers with it.

Sounds great, will definitely try do this on mine as well. how did you go about ordering them? Over the phone, or did you go to customer service in the shop?
    Cheers

I am in USA and I just called the local store, jumped through some prompts, and got to customer service. I didn't even know what the parts were called but she looked them up for me. They sent them and shipped them for free. I have 14 more drawers that need them in Malaysia. I'm thinking to get more in USA and carry them over with me rather than trying to source them in Malaysia.
