im getting a lenovo z580 next week. im gona post 2 links to the same laptop on the same site. both have EXACTLY same specs except one has 1GB dedicated memory and the other has 2GB dedicated memory.

theyre exactly the same price. shouldnt the 2GB one be dearer? the 1GB is available for pre-orders to be released next week. the 2GB is available to ship right now.

    whats the deal with that?

    1GB - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_Z580_1292735.html

    2GB - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_Z580_1206320.html

obviously i should go for the 2GB as its exactly same price yes?

p.s anyone got a discount code for saveonlaptops? worth a try ;)

I'd say it's just a typo. If you look at the specs further down the page on the 1st laptop the graphics card is listed as the 630 with 2GB.

It would be a consideration if you were looking for a Desktop GPU, but 2GB is wasted on a laptop with a resolution of 1366 x 768, and even if the laptop resolution was higher (say 1080p) the GT630m would not be powerful enough to run games at the settings that would require more than 1GB VRAM .

Even fully maxed out only a handfull of the most graphically demanding recent games will break 1GB VRAM usage (think BF3 on ultra with a huge amount of anti aliasing etc).

But since they are both the same price and the 2GB version is available right now then might as well get that on.

No it doesnt? It says "Dedicated (NVIDIA Geforce with 1GB Dedicated Memory)"

The blurb at the bottom is just a generic piece about that series.
Even at that it has an asterisk to denote its only available on selected models.
Play it safe with laptop 2.
The only thing laptop 1 has is that windows 8 is installed (hence the pre-orders) whereas you can easily upgrade after if you want (but you'll have a better graphics card).

I'd say, it's because Windows 8 is cheaper than Windows 7, so you'll get the 2 GB GPU for the same price.

FYI, at PC Specialist, you'll get the Genesis IV with a Core i5 3210M, 8 GB and GT 640M (2 GB) for almost the same price, £564... the 640M is running circles around the 630M.

Thanks for the replies guys. Never noticed that pc1 was windows 8..my bad. I'll order pc2 to be on the safe side, I plan on upgrading to w8 with that special offer that's going.

Will the 1GB extra memory actually not make a difference, as first poster said?

I'd say it wouldn't make much of a difference since the GT 630M is rather poor at gaming (regardless the amount of memory) and for ordinary tasks it really doesn't matter whether there is 1 or 2 GB VRAM available.

As they say a picture says 1000 words :), and the following link shows a few benchmarks graphs in Battlefield 3 for the 1GB and 2GB versions of the desktop HD7850. This is probably the most VRAM hungry of all current games, and illustrates nicely what I was saying before.

    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Club_3D/HD_7850_RoyalQueen/9.html

As you can see the 1GB versions goes toe to toe with the 2GB right up until 1920X1200, but a clear gap open up at 2560 X 1600, and it then gets completely obliterated at 5760 X 1080 (Although neither card is actually powerful enough to produce remotely playable framerates at that point). I suspect had they used a higher AA setting than 4x you might have seen a difference at 1920 X 1200 as well.

In contrast if you look at a bench mark for an older game like COD 4 you can see that even at the very highest resolutions it is not demanding enough graphically to expose the limitations of the 1GB version, so the performance remains identical for both cards.

    Hi guys,

I hope I'm not being so rude asking a different question at this same thread...

I'm thinking about purchase this same laptop (laptop 2) at the same online store, but I'm a little bit afraid about the warranty. I'm currently living in Dublin, if I'm buying at a uk store the warranty is still valid here?

    thanks!

No you have a full set of consumer rights whenever you make an online purchase within the EU, in addition Lennovo warranties are fully transferable across any western european country.
