I have a 2005 new model Passat1.9tdi. I have tried two trailers on it and lights are not working. The manual lists fuses relating to towing. some of these are not in my board. If the car tail lights are working should the socket also work. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thanks

Trailer sockets are prone to water ingress and bad connections. Dismantle the socket and test the connections. Use a meter or test lamp to verify there's power going to the socket and the neutral wire is ok.

are you sure its a factory towbar?

I've seen some after market sockets butchered into the factory wiring causing problems

Not a Factory towbar. Fitted by so called professionals a few years ago. I will take off the socket tomorrow and have a look..

    Thanks

Would you not try putting fuses in the slots listed in the manual first and see what happens?

The trailer wiring would not be there as its not factory fitted.
