Cam gear train

    What happened to the germans that they forgot how to make a decent cam chain and tensioner assembly? The komp mercs, the tsi vw's, the beemers all seem to have chocolate cam chains, sprockets, tensioner guides or tensionsers.
    Maybe they should pay a few extra Pfennig and use a cam gear train, A bit of a whirley noise maybe, but they could market that with some cool spiel.

    I would quite like the C180 as my next motor, but more than likely will buy a petrol accord.

    The japs are just as bad, the diesel accord, nissan navara etc.

    the 6 cylinder diesel bmw's have one of the best.

    Everything is about cost cutting these days. Many of the Germans live of the premise of 'perceived quality', i.e make the dash, doors and all touch points feel good quality and people will think the car is good quality, even if everything under the skin is made by the lowest bidder.


    Its also a case that most parts on modern cars are designed with such close tolerances and maintenance requirements and are tested in tightly controlled test conditions. All of these, for the most part, have very little to do with the use/abuse a car gets when handed to the average jane/joe to use in everyday conditions where poor car care and maintenance become very real factors.

    the d22 navara had a tensioner recall, now the problem must be huge to warrent a recall, and what did they do for the d40, they fitted a simplex chain :O and fixed the tensioner, so instead of rattleing for a while it just snaps.

    It took years of high quality engineering to establish the worldwide excepted branding of "German quality".And it
    seems strange that they're willing to throw it away or potentially hand it to the Asian market. Why don't they fix
    problems instead of denying them.How hard could it be to develop a cam gear train and just be done with it?

    The German marketing mind set is nothing short of brain washing. It has been pushed and pushed for years about Germans making the best cars(they invented the car and they certainly used to make cars like tanks) and its so ingrained into peoples minds that now they sell cars based on brand name alone. They don't have to worry about long term reliability as they see the customer buying new and keeping the car for the warranty period as the only ones they need to impress. Admitting to a design flaw or faulty engineering is simply a no no as it would effect the mindset.

    Once the cars have moved on a few years and reached the second hand market the makers don't care how long they last as by this stage they can blame any maintenance/use/abuse they like for failures.
