Hi all, I'm thinking of changing my camera. I'm thinking of getting one when I'm visiting America, is this a good idea or are their some pitfalls with this. Their are some huge savings to be had over their. Any advice would be great thanks

if you purchase in USA your warranty is in USA (Generally) .... so if it breaks it must be sent back to USA repair center.

its not that much cheaper than purchasing from one of the many online retailers.(do your research - some of them have bad reputations)

if you purchase from outside the EU - you are liable to pay VAT on importing it - and it must (legally) be declared on return from USA - many people ignore this and do not declare - but if you are a professional or plan on turning professional this kind of thing can catch(hurt financially) you if you are audited by Revenue.... even if you are not planning to turn pro - you can still be audited by Revenue.

if you purchase in USA and are staying in the same state you are liable for state sales tax - this varies and in general is it 8% there are also other taxes added (some states do not have this) - this is claimable on your return home - many people do not realise that as a tourist you can claim the VAT/State Tax back when you leave the country - if you keep the receipts for all the money you have spent you could end out getting a healthy payment.

Given the present economic situation - there is very little benefit to purchasing in USA over purchasing in the EU, 5-10yrs ago it could mean a saving of thousands for professionals....these days ..not so much.

SHOP AROUND FOR THE BEST PRICE - I can save almost €1000 on a new camera body by travelling up north - compared to bricks and mortar stores in Dublin and around the country. (ie. Canon 5D mkIII is just over £2K (ex vat) in Nordy land and its almost €3500 in shops in Dublin)

Conns cameras have the 5D mkIII at €3399 and online and in shops up north its a little over £2K (ex vat) - if you purchase up north you do not have to pay vat.
