    Hi All

In years gone by I would never have claimed this but now needs must.

Does anyone know how I go about claiming the clothing allowance for teachers?

I know the flat rate expenses are €518 per annum but how do we go about claiming this and can it be backdated? Do I just contact the revenue and get it refunded as a tax credit?

May as well claim now before it's cut in December....

    Thanks in advance

    hi

Ring revenue to get it added in and to claim back for previous year. You are limited by number of years you can go back. It is not an clothing allowance as such but for materials / books. Called flat rate expenses

I never knew this even existed. I assume it is scrapped alongside my degree/dip allowance?

You can claim it via your online revenue account - along with medical expenses et al.

No, it's separate to your teaching qualifications. It's a tax credit essentially, so unless flat rate expenses are scrapped in the budget you would be entitled to it regardless of when you started teaching.

Ring the revenue and get it added on if you don't already have it and get it back dated for the last few years if you were teaching.

I don't think flat rate is €518 unless you're a pe teacher. Mine is €279

Is it not 492 or something plus your teaching council tax credit? I have been claiming it for years. Also see about tax back on tuition fees for any courses you may have done. Got a cheque for 500 quid the other week from a postgrad thing I did about 3 years ago.

Claim everything! Also if you do any sec work and don't go into the high tax bracket in school you should look for a review of your tax for the last few years

€518 for an ordinary teacher since at least 2008 - see here www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/flat-rate-expenses.xls

Changed the thread title to reflect the actual name of the allowance and to fend off 'the gubbernmint pay fer teachers' clothes' rabble.

    grrr
i've been into the revenue office at least 3 times since i began teaching to claim back tax, and have never heard of this - needless to say they weren't upfront in telling me bout it either
i presume i can claim back the last 4 years though.
does anyone know if you have to have worked a minimum amount of hours in a year to claim this? i would have been on mat leave in the past four years so just wondering if i still claim for that year?

Never heard of this. Thank you for bringing it to my attention I shall look into it to see whether I am entitled to claim anything.

remember this is a tax credit, you don't actually get the 500 quid but 20% of it

What? The Government pays for teachers' clothes?

    Oh. My. God. Like.

Rest assured, I've been claiming it for years. Unfortunately, they have no tax credit for fuel used in getting to school, while TDs manage to get their public service expenses paid in full, and unvouched.
