Yes they can, my mum uses them for it,

but to be honest - they are great for anyone working - when i get in in the evenings - I clean out the fire and put in a layer of coal and throw one of these in and the fire is good for 2 hours,

I find them great for starting a fire.Cut them in 3 and use as a starter ,much quicker and easier than using fire lighters.

Do you light them like firelighters, and do they take off like them?

Light them up with the wrapper and they stay lit for about 30mins(using a 1/3), by that time they have started to die out,the other fuel(wood/turf) is burning strongly.

Basically instant fire/heat , great if you come in late from work and can't be waiting for ages for firelighter +fuel to light.

I know my local centra has them but my mum lives in Dublin and her local centra never offer them for sale, thats why i was afraid to say it was across the board, :D

They usually light for 90minutes for me, it says 2 hours on the outside but they never light that long since they made them smaller!

I use them a lot - so its a great deal for me - I will stock up and make sure we will have enough to get us over christmas, :D
