I've a Ryanair flight next week to Barcelona and something has come up and I and my friend can not go.

What are the chances of getting a refund? ... OK non I suppose. Then what is my best option? I haven't checked in online yet. How much does it cost to change the names on the flights so I can give the flight tickets to someone else?
Can I still take out insurance at this stage and let the flight go without me and my friend and then claim a refund? Is that fraud? I don't want to be involved in fraud (but tell me more ...)

no chance of refund (well taxes less admin charge maybe), name change is VERY expensive. And yes it would be fraudulent at this stage to get insurance and claim. Even if you tried, teh reason needs to be very good and needs a lot of backup.

Unfortunately best advice is just to forget it...

As mentioned above forget about it. How much did you pay for the Flight?
Can I apply for a refund of an unused flight?

All Ryanair fares are fully changeable in respect of flight/dates/times/routes and names up to 4 hours before the flight departure time via the Manage My Booking section of the website. However air fares, fees and/or charges are non-refundable.
If you do not use your booked flight, the fare, fees and charges are non-refundable but you may apply in writing within one month of the date of original travel for the refund of the Government Tax paid. Government tax refunds are subject to an administration fee. click here for fee details. If the refund amount is less than the applicable administration fee, no refund will be made.
