Dilemma

Since Dec 2010 I have been employed with a small Local Government (PublicSector). I had no postgraduate work experience and I was grateful that my bosstook a chance on me and offered me work. This offer also included sponsorshipallowing me to stay in the country (Australia). Upon hiring me, my bossacknowledged that it was a gamble and stated that he expected 2 years’ service torepay the gamble. (It will be two years in December)

I worked hard got settled in and stated to perform well at my job. Howeverabout 2 months ago my feet began to get itchy and I decided I would like tobroaden my experience with change of scenery.

I have been given an interview with a company in the private sector laterthis week. If the interview was to be successfuland I accepted the job I would likely be leaving my current position before theend of November. This is an issue as in my line of work the public try to get everythingthrough in time for Christmas, making the months leading up to it the busiesttime of year. To add insult to injury the private company that I couldpotentially be working for are set to have work lined up in the near futurewith my current employer!!

I have a very good relationship with my boss and I really hate the Ideaof leaving him short at such a busy time of year. I have discussed thepossibility with my partner who thinks that the change would be too good of an opportunityto pass up.

I’m really torn on this issue and I would appreciate if anybody couldoffer advice / personal experience with something similar. I have also drafted a list of pros and consfor taking the new job (if offered). Thanks

    Pros

Better Money (Wage increase of about 18 – 20%)

    Career Advancement

    International company

Personally feel like I need a change in work environment

    Cons

    1 Hour Commute (Currently 35min)

Leaving current employers (boss) short just when we are getting reallybusy

You almost have your two years done.

Also, your job is public sector. You might not like leaving the boss in the lurch but it's different to a situation where you might be leaving a small private company in a bad situation.

I've never been in that scenario. You know the boss yourself.

My suggestion based on the limited information, tell your current boss of the offer. Try to see if you can delay starting the other one by a few weeks and say this to the current manager. He'll probably understand.

All you've been offered is an interview.

Don't count your chickens - and most certainly don't tell your current boss anything until you have a written job offer in your hands.

Sorry for conusion. As previous poster correctly said have a concrete job offer. When I said "offer" in my post, I was thinking "job offer" and not "offer of an interview"

You mentioned you were sponsored? do you mean 457 visa?

    if so

    (a) will the new employer take over your sponsorship?
    (b) Is the new employer eligible to Sponsor?
