Running an Old Airliner?

Seeing that plane crash TV show led me to ponder one of the age old questions - what would I do with a lotto win?

So, you buy an ex airliner like that 727 which seemed at least some way airworthy for £300k - what would it cost to keep it going (for more than a one way flight into a desert)?

That's not an airport, it's a helipad for Xenu.

Unless it was a Euro Lotto win you'd soon run out of money from your winnings. Old aeroplanes of any sort are money pits. You'd need pilots crew, maintenance. Old ones break a lot.

Best thing to do is to hire one when you need it.

Travolta's house is at an "Aviation Community" called Jumbolair near Ocala, Florida. Travolta does not own Jumbolair and many other people also live there in private residences.

If I won the Euromillions I'd buy an executive B707 and paint it in a classic airliner CS similar to what travolta did.

Well maintained, recently refitted exec 707's seem to be available for around the $5 million mark.

Paint it in the old EI livery!

Actually, could you get away with that? If I bought an old 707 and decided to paint it with the 60's EI livery but use Aer Squonk instead of Aer Lingus, would I still get angry letters from Herr Mueller? I presume I couldn't use the Shamrock either?

If you asked nicely and came to an agreement, no problem. If you went ahead and did it anyway, then they'd see you in court. The brand is precious to Aer lingus and there is no way they'd tolerate it being abused. No airline would, if it valued itself.
As for keeping an old airliner active,to flight status, you'd still need a ton of money, for even the smallest, like an old 748 or a Shed. Pilots, engineers, an AOC, tools, spares, etc, etc.
