What are the major differences between them? Are the games the same on both?

I would like to get one but don't want to pay for a new vita if the old psp will do the job just as well and cheaper as I mainly play the ps3 anyway and the psp would just be for travelling and such.

Psp plays ps1 and psp games either umd or from the psn store.

Vita plays ps vita and selected psp and ps1 games from the store or ps vita carts. Ps vita is much more expensive and not doing great at the moment but there are some great games for it. Best to look at what games you like and pick. I got a vita cause it plays the psp and ps1 games I like and also the newer vita games that I wanted and also cost and how much you'll use it.

OP, what kind of games do you like? If you're more into the likes of FIFA you might be better off with a Vita but the PSP is cheaper and has an excellent catalogue of RPGs. Both machines will play PSOne games as far as I know and the Vita can play some PSP games. For the price of a Vita you could get a PSP and quite a few games and the aforementioned RPGs take ages to complete.

Ah stuff like the metal gear solid games that you can't get on ps3 maybe tekken and a few others nothing really up to date so you think the psp would suit me best in that regard?

Well, if you're after those then both MGS, Tekken and Tekken 2 are available on the PSN as PSOne classics. MGS is £7.99 but I don't know about Tekken. There were a few MGS games released on the PSP as well as 2 God of War games if they float your boat. It really depends on what you want to spend. I had my PSP nicked a few months ago and decided to go for another rather than a Vita as I was mainly playing PSOne games and Dissidia 012 on it.

Vita is closer to a PS3 than a PSP it really is a little beast of a machine. Travelling it is brilliant as you can have Netflix on it too once you have wi-fi access. Dual stick as well make a huge difference. I would splash the extra bit of cash and get the Vita.

Just read on the modding forum that the older psp's can be hacked to emulate older games.

Which psp 1/2/3000 or a vita would be the best emulator and bang for buck?

If you were going to go down that road, you'd need custom firmware. PSP might be better for that as it's cheaper and the CFW will be older with most of the bugs having been ironed out.
