I live in Dublin, close enough to the city centre. I need to get an aerial for saorview but was just wondering if I could get away with installing an indoor aerial instead as I rather not pay for having one installed on the roof.

Has anyone tried one of those nice flat looking antennas? Something like this, are they any use either in or outdoor in Dublin?

Those flat things are horrible and designed for parts of continental Europe where vertical polarisation is used. You can't beat a proper aerial mounted outside or possibly the loft. The TV network is designed for outdoor aerials 10 metres high. If you must try an indoor one get one that looks like a miniature outdoor aerial. Try a €2 shop one.

With the ERPs many saorview sites are running in comparison to their existing UHF analogue counterparts, one would have to wonder!

With any kind of indoor aerial, windows are your friend (even if they are not facing the desired direction). And the broadcasts come from the southeast, so a south-facing window or wherever has fewer obstacles to the southeast will work best. And that advice applies to all aerials but where indoor aerials are concerned, you need to exploit every avenue to make reception work.

Having said that: once you have a south-facing window to use, pretty much anywhere in the city centre will receive Saorview. Interruptions can't be ruled out but it's better than nothing if you can't install a standard aerial!

You don't say but I'm wondering do you have an existing arial?
Let's clear one myth - there's NO such thing as a digital or saorview aerial ! If you can recieve a good analouge signal on your existing aerial then it will recieve the Saorview signal fine too, in fact the picture will be better :)

I have a piece of crap € shop "rabbit ears" stuck to the wall behind the tv, with the antennas retracted so they do not show over the top of the tv. Works perfectly for Saorview. Its all about distance and obstructions between you and the transmitter. I'm less than 10kms from the Mt Leinster transmitter and have unobstructed line of sight.
