Sram Double Tap.

Is there anyone out there using the Sram double tap system that could give a review on there experience with it? Considering this with a future bike I may or may not buy.

Also, I know Sram and Shimano are interchangeable but would the double tap system work with say a 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace rear mech?

Looking at videos on youtube, I like what I see. Currently building a Ridley with Dura-Ace/Ultegra parts but would like to know what I'm missing out on that Sram have and Shimano don't.

Another question... Why are Sram and Shimano both compatible with eachother?

    No, different cable pull ratio.

Mechs and shifters have to match.

SRAM and Shimano have compatible cogs/chains

Campy and Shimano have compatible shifters, i.e you can run shimano derailleurs with campy shifters, because they pull 1:1. SRAM pull 2:1

    I thought as much.

    Do you run Sram yourself?

Do any of your local bike stores stock SRAM equipped bikes? It's really a feel thing, you may like the hood shape and shift mechanism, or you may hate it. Hard for anyone to comment on something so subjective other than to give the above technical facts.

Do you like steak? Would I like steak?

You can run your shimano wheels with a SRAM system, something I miss with Campagnolo. It's like running a mac and everyone else is running windows.

I went from Shimano Tiagra on Alu bike to SRAM Red on a Carbon bike, so I went from one end of the scale to the other (plus changed manufacturers).

I love the Sram 'Double Tap'. When you change to smaller cog (i.e. up a gear) it is instant and seamless, I feel like a F1 driver it is so quick. And I can change to bigger cog (i.e down a gear) using the same lever, and I can even change down 1 or 2 or 3 gears in one go (just push the lever farther).

My cassette is Shimano, and my chain is SRAM (with the Powerlink that allows me to break the chain easily), so Shimano and SRAM are interchangeable in this respect.

The other advantage of SRAM is that you don't have cables sticking out the top of the shifters, so cleaner and less likely to get damamged in a prang.

Went into a LBS in a certain town recently and asked him could he adjust the gears as I could not reach the lowest gear in the casette. 'No problem', says he, 'bring it in'. When he saw the SRAM he quickly changed his mind, 'can't be adjusted' he says. To cap it all he continued his rant. 'SRAM are the biggest heap of 5hit ever'. So I left thinking 'you bo**ox, you won't ever get any business from me'. Went home and adjusted the RD limit and fixed it myself. So there you go, some people just don't feel the love for SRAM.

I do, on two bikes: race bike and commuter/all round bike. Both SRAM Red/Force mix. One I built myself and the other was built for me, both are maintained by me.

I like the shifting and don't find it any harder to maintain than Shimano, but as youtheman's anecdote illustrates, some mechanics hate it.

Youtheman, I actually had the same experience with my LBS last year. Upgraded my frame and then went in looking to buy a new groupo, asked about Sram and the only recommendation I got for it was the chainset. He hated it by the sounds of things. Just had a rant over the Double Tap system.

Is it a big leap to make? From shimano to sram?

Personally I love the Sram red front mech where it 'fish tales' to stop any chain rub no matter what the gearing is. Clever system that Campy and Shimano should look into.
