Hey all, looking to pretty much head to South Dakota during the summer of 2013. I don't know when exactly as it doesn't matter all that much since I'll be out of college during the summer months. I'm just looking for flight options more than anything else that are reasonably priced. I'll probably be there for a couple of weeks and more than likely will have a place to stay so I won't need a package deal though none the less they are appreciated.

My in laws live in Flanreau!
There are no international airport, so you will need at least one connecting flight, possibly two as they are all fairly small regional airports. Whereabouts will you be staying?

Visit Keystone where Mount Rushmore in. It is a town that during the Summer is packed but off-season is like apres-ski season! Great hike up from the town. Some good food and bar places. Rapid City is a nice place as well.

The girlfriend lives about an hour out of Rapid City. Thing is with accomodation is she is in the process of moving in with her friend so I'm unsure if I'll be given a blessing to stay there :pac: Regardless, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I'm more focused on flights than anything else.
Quite good value to Denver from Dublin with American Airlines at the moment, I was pricing it only yesterday and I was getting quoted €550 return per person with a stop in Chicago. That's pretty good value, but obviously you'd have to try and make your way from Denver to SD!

My wife is from Deadwood, SD, and we live in Denver. The drive from Denver to SD is about 8 hours and pretty boring, done it several times, no scenery via Wyoming. If you choose that route it will take a day out of your stay as there is no Dub - Den Direct. You have to connect in O'Hare Chicago which adds a leg to your journey.

My suggestion is to fly any US International Airport directly from Dublin or Shannon and then get a connecting flight to Rapid City. This should be pretty straight forward and even better if you can land in the Midwest and avoid a big airport like O'Hare or JFK, thats my experience, hope it helps.

Best o Luck, Let me know if you have more questions!

Agree. I did it last year. There is nothing interesting along the way. I did a lot of travelling in Wyoming last year with my ex who lives in the US and there is for a large extent nothing there but Praire Land! It took us about a 7 hour journey from Keystone to Denver in sun, sun & rain. Far better if you can get to Rapid City.

Also having travelled with American a number of times, I don't recommend them. Yes they are cheap. But they are the "Greyhound" of air travel. The serious is very poor, the entertainment is dire and the food from Chicago to Dublin this time was prison food at best. I could not wait to get off the plane particularly this time in Dublin. American Eagle - the sister airline who run internal flights are way better.

My recommandation - fly with United or Aer Lingus to New York or Washington and then fly internally to Rapid City as suggested.
