My hair seems to be falling out?!

I am a 25 year old woman. Ive just finished college with a masters and cannot get a job. Im stuck working weekends in a pub. I have braces and cant travel or move away until 7 months, when my braces are finished doing their magic. Im single a few months after being with someone i thought i loved but he turned out, after 2 years, to be a nasty guy...

Im stuck at home every day, worrying about what job im going to find, if any. I am just so lost at the minute. I stay awake until 3 or 4 am and dont get up until 3pm. Recently my hair has become limp, and chunks of it come out when i comb my fingers through it.

What can i do to help my personal happiness and my hair?

Im presuming the hair coming out is due to stress.

    Very likely.

The best thing to do is go see your GP. We can't give medical advice here and that is exactly what you need.

He will have seen it all before and know what exactly to do.

    Good luck!

Heya exact same thing happened to me when I was 25 as well, stuck at home, working in a job I disliked, various other factors etc etc.

It's called alopecia, and I developed two bald spots, each the size of about an old 50p piece or something, literally overnight. Very scary and thought I was going to lose all my hair. But I didn't :) It all just grew back a few months later, very strange.

Also there's no firm evidence to suggest that it's due to stress, so don't feel bad about yourself or think that it's your "fault" for coping badly with life or something!! (Cause that's why I thought as well). It really it just one of those random things, and you really can't do anything about it.

You sound stressed at the moment. You have been working hard and may not have been eating well or having enough sleep for a while. When you go to your doctor ask them to take some blood and get it tested for your vit b levels, iron, hormone levels and thyroid function. All of the above can be sorted out but you won't feel good or may not be sleeping well as a result of the above.
In regards to work I would keep applying for jobs and tell your family, friends, relatives ect that you are looking for work as they may know of a job. I am sure if you get a job you can get time off for appointments re the brace.
In regards to your ex if he was a nasty man you are better off with out him.
Get up at 10 o'clock each day, have your breakfast and go for a good walk as it will get you out of the house. When you come back sit down and look in the papers and online for a job.
Also go to your local social welfare office to sign on if you are not already doing so.
If you willing to put in some effort now I am sure that things will get better for you.

Invest even one or two hours a day in charitable causes even use your masters to help them - this gives you incentive to get up and a sense that you are doing something worthwhile boosting esteem.
Get a social outlet that can help to alleviate some of the stress and boredom - when bored more time to think + more anxiety = greater stress
Of course see your doctor and take a look at your diet

Hair loss has many causes and it's never been solidly proven that stress is a cause; but stress can have untold effects on our physical wellbeing so can affect hair growth, yes. Your doctor would be the first port of call to have your hormone levels, iron levels, etc. checked to rule out a physical cause. Many people go through periods of hair loss and it amounts to nothing, so don't worry yourself even more so unnecessarily over this! Best of luck.

    Been there.

Some tips and things which helped (hair now back to normal):

    1. Implement time for self care. Plan special things for yourself, even if it is just an hour with a library book wrapped in a blanket by the fire with a hot cup of tea. Look after yourself and your needs.

    2. Buy Udo's oil. It makes hair grow back, I promise. It worked for me.

    3. Create a new routine for your life. For example, every day do one chore, run one errand, read one article, ring one friend, watch a favourite tv programme, do one favour for someone else, apply for one job, go for a run. Many small goals. It will be hard for the first few days and liberating after that. Go to bed by 11 and get up by 9.

    Hang on in there.
