Passat B6 Door Lock Sticky

Hi folks, I'm wondering if someone could make a diagnosis. I've noticed an intermittent problem on the car over that last number of weeks, where if I open the car with the remote, the passenger door lock doesn't open and the door has to be opened from the inside, by pulling the handle. If I unlock/relock/unlock/relock/unlock etc, it sometimes releases itself, and the door can be opened from the outside. It has become more problematic over the weekend and the previous method doesn't work now

I've hoping someone might come back with 'ah sure, throw a bit of WD40 on it'!! I'm hoping it may be a simple replacement of a mechanism and won't require major surgery and VCDS recoding! Maybe this needs to be replaced .... ???

    Hoping you can help

Try a bit of grease first. I had the same problem with my drivers door. Put a bit of grease on it now it's fine.

Is yours a bit warped/off-line or harder to shut than the rest of the doors? - it could be causing it to stick and may damage the motor eventually.

I'd imagine the locking mechanism is plug and go if it comes to that. VCDS coding should be further up the chain.

The door is straight. No problems opening and closing it.

Are you reckoning I have to remove the door panel to access the lock? Or just greasing it from the outside, applying some pressure to the grease to force it in?

Start with the simplest cheapest option first and work from there.

Ye just grease the lock on the outside of the door. Stuff a bit of grease into it, wipe off excess, then close the door from inside and lock and unlock manually a few times. Worked for me but my motor was trying to open the lock and giving up. Can you hear it trying to open the door. Yours could be stuffed. No harm in putting the grease in anyway. Makes the mechanisms last longer.

    Common problem with the passat.
    Had it on mine too.
Google it for some temporary fixes, but my lock was eventually replaced under warranty.

Possible cause, which happened to me, is someone pulling the door handle when it's locked. First thing is to make sure nobody does above. With door open pull inner and outer handle at same time to reset. I found this fix on vwaudi. com website.

I know it's early days, but I think this may have solved it. When I reset it the first time, I could feel it stiff at first, then something freed itself up. Subsequent resets had no stiffness.

    Thanks Alan

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I firmly believe that my door lock mechanism is to blame now, as it can't be opened at all from the outside, without opening it from the inside first. I've read a number of posts across the internet on other forums and see that is a common problem.

I've sourced the part from Traynors and got delivery of it this morning. I'm fairly good with my hands, so I'm going to try an fit it myself, but would anyone have any diagrams of the task involved in removing the door panels on a B6? Would anyone know of any pitfalls or tricks I need to look out for? I have a diagram for door panel and lock removal for a B5. Is it the same/similar?

    Thanks

Looks like a right bi**h of a job really. I took the following PDF's from a 2006 passat comfort in the service software. It looks like a really fiddly job, but i'm sure it would pay off to do it yourself!

It looks like after you remove the door trim (which is on the link the last person posted) you have to remove the carrier frame (supports the door lock, window motor, and speaker) before you can get at the lock mechanism.

Refitting of the lock is the reversal of removing.

Here is a link to an online version of the elsawin software, used in the garages. It contains all the information you need, and has the stuff I posted above.

    The main page is: http://elsaweb.spaghetticoder.org/

The page containing the information you need, and I posted above is:

Start at the left, click the car, year, variant, section ect...

Nice Ken. Thanks. They're nice diagrams. I'm probably going to wait until the weather improves to do the job! Don't want to get caught out with the light fading should I go into overtime on it!

Nothing worse than an hour job turning into a 4 hour job!

In my infinate wisdom i decided to do 2 wishbones between showers yesterday...3 hours later, 2 drilled out bolts, 2 trips to motor factors, flooded stoney driveway, 7 small cuts to fingers, 1 slightly larger cut to left hand, job done!!!

    You're welcome!

It's great to have as a bookmark alright. So much information about so many cars! I hope it lasts though.

I'm not sure how the car manufacturers would feel about this kind of information being publicly available.

I was thinking about the copyright details, but I don't think using it is copyright violation. It is information that isn't actually for sale to the car owners anyway, so VW don't stand to make any sort of loss from us using it!
