Road bike suggestions for approx €3000

Looking to get a half decent road bike to race, budget approx €3000 on the BTW scheme, frame size 58/60cm. What’s available out there for that budget? Only bike I have is a Felt Z85 with Shimano mix, I use this for commuting, training and the odd race and would love a new machine only for racing. Was thinking of a road bike with Ultegra at minimum but could be swayed to go campy. A good wheelset is crucial too. Many thanks.

Half decent for three grand?! Sure everyone knows you need to spend at least four for something half decent.

    Yes you should!

But in all seriousness, with a budget that large there is a massive range of bikes that you can potentially own. Like bmcf said, you know what you want and if the felt is in your mind from day one thats the one for you! Otherwise you're going to spend hours racking your brain scrolling through pages and pages of bikes.

no point blowing 3k on something only half dacent, you'd be better off getting something fully dacent for the 6k....

Sorry not very clear in OP but the Felt is my current and only bike used for everything. What to get myself a new bike used only for racing and nice sunny dry days, i.e. twice a year. :D

Ah i see. How about upgrading the felt to a better model? If you like the geometry and that?

Was thinking that, just asking the question and trying to get a few ideas and recommendations from others.

Have you considered building your own bike?
Spec your own bike, use discounted parts from last year.

Get a decent frame like a Storck Scenero or BMC, dura ace cl24 wheels (going cheap on bike-discount.de now) and ultegra or sram rival/red group.
Plenty left over for seatpost/saddle/handlebars/finishing kit/build.

Too good an opportunity to miss.

I'd say he'd have to buy a bike complete considering its on the BTW scheme?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 581 ✭✭✭greenmat

Nice suggestions, was thinking of buying complete bike on BTW. Don't know about Di2, call me old fashioned. Bike build would be nice, all the parts you really want on the same bike.

My choice would be a Cannondale or Canyon. Canyon 2013 range look lovely, and decent kit too.

This is a lot of bike for just under €3k if you got them to swap out the compact for a 53/39.

Edit: This is also a really good offer.

You may want to factor in racing/training insurance at around 10% of the cost of the bike yearly. I'm sure there are many people who race on good/expensive bikes without insurance but I for one can't take the risk of totalling my baby without it..

May I ask, what you're riding and where do you get your insurance? My bike is totalling up to be pretty expensive and would look into this.

Is it the same as car insurance? The premium goes down the longer the insurance? And also say your bike is worth three grand, obviously in two years it won't be worth that much, do the insurance company factor in depreciation?

    Sorry for hi-jack OP

I got my insurance from cyclesure.ie - haven't had to claim anything thankfully so I can't vouch for how good they are when it comes to that.

I don't expect the premium to reduce in year two. Taking your example, your bike may not be worth 3 grand in two years, however in the event of a claim, you would be replacing old with new to the same standard.

    Hope this helps

Very stiff but cracking bike. Great value if your size is in stock.

Take a trip to Planet X in athlone, you mightn't have to go the whole 3 k to something really good, and chance to try before you buy.

I bought a Planet X in march and it seems to compare with main brand bikes that are a least a third dearer if not more.

    BTW for 3 grand . . . How u managing that ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,236 ✭✭✭Idleater

There is no upper bound on btw purchases, so assuming the company shell out the purchase price and the original intended purpose of the bike is to use it even partially for commuting to work then there's no issue.
I had a nice chat with a guy on the way home one evening during the "summer" who commuted occasionally from beyond kikcock and had bought himself a lovely bike with the new sram red.

Great value buying from Canyon, and some great bikes available from http://www.base2race.ie/stores/velom...torck-scenero/ posted earlier. Need to go and see them in the flesh before I make up my mind. Decisions, decisions.

No, they only sell direct from their website. Haven't even found out if you can do the BTW scheme with them. Anyone I've met with a Canyon really like them but they would hardly say differently.

I would be ringing bike shops and scouring the web until I found that last 2012 or even 2011 bike in my size with dura ace or equivalent on it

Canyon AEROAD CF 8.0 DI2 2012 is a beaut imo:

    http://www.canyon.com/_en/outlet/article.html?o=A1026161

I heard that the differences between the Canyon CF CLX and the standard CF aren't much, probably wouldn't justify the extra €1k in cost.

That was last year but they have redesigned the SLX range frame for 2013.

I've just built up a Colnago CLX3.0 with SRAM Red for just on the 3 grand mark.

It involved stripping the components that came on the bike and selling them on here as unused. The groupset then came from Merlin.

The Scott Addict that was shown by Rofo was nice also.

When looking through the wheelsets on bike-discount.de, I found this...

    What a beaut...
