Astra coolant

I bought a 2008 Astravan 1.3 cdti less than 2 months ago and it's going perfect bar one thing. It seems to be using a small bit of coolant. 1 month ago I topped it up with water to the mark on the bottle. It was only down a small bit under the line. I checked it yesterday and it is a small bit down again I have done about 3 k Kim's since topping it up. Another issue is the coolant is watery there is no colour so clearly it needs anti-freeze is it as simple as topping it up with antifreeze or should I drain the tank and start again as there is a lack of antifreeze currently. Also is there a perticular type of anti-freeze I need. Coolant is a subject I have little knowledge on so any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a closed system so coolant loss should be 0 over 3000k kms. The owners manual should detail what coolant is required. You should test / get tested what's in there % wise and go from there if it's not adequate. Realistically if you require to add coolant you'll have to drain off some water.

Thanks I figured I would have to drain some it is not a major amount of usage but is noticeable but I think if some water was drained and coolant was added it would help.

It won't help with the loss, you should ideally trace that to the cause and get it sorted.

These are prone to leaks from a couple of places. You'd need to get a pressure test done to check for a leak in the system.

I'll get it checked by Opel in Kilkenny on Friday as I'm in college in cork for the week but it doesn't get much driving during the week anyway all the driving is Friday to monday. Ill get them to drain the tank and fill it with coolant after the leak is fixed as I think the current coolant is probably watered too much at this stage. Should the pressure test leak fix take long? I assume it's one of the hoses that's perished and will have to be replaced?

Get it sorted before winter because if there is no anti-freeze it could cause big problems if the water freezes. Granted I would have to get pretty cold but it happens.

Just An update brought the van to opel today and Nissan doctor was correct there was a leak. I arrived in the garage at 3.30 and by 4.45 they had just found the leak it was in a bad spot. There is two pipes leaking onto the starter motor at the point of connection. As they close at five I had to book it in for next friday to get the work done. Basically they will remove the 2 clips put on two new ones. Take out the old coolant but in fresh coolant and an additive. And that should be the problem sorted. The service manager told me it will take some time as the leak is in a really awkward place with very limited access. At least I know whats wrong now. Thanks to everyone for there help and I'll let you know how I get on next Friday.
