The consequences of debt collecting?

If a business who have admitted an administrative error on their part created a dual account that they started billing someone for and if it was brought to their attention and their response was to just ignore the bills. If this lead to a person getting a letter from a debt collecting agency, what recourse does this person have to ensure that their credit rating will not be negatively effected?

Is it the business responsibility to ensure that the debt collectors are informed that the person does not owe them any money and is there a form of proof that the person is entitled to?

Entry of judgment can be highly detrimental to an individual.

A number of causes of action arise.
