Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Someone recommended Glucosamine and Chondroitin capsules to me recently to help with knee pain which I've started to get after long hill walks. Just wondering if anyone here uses them and would they recommend them?

Ther is some evidence that it can help with arthritis of the knee so it may make sense trying it if thats what your doctor or physio recommends.
I don't think there is any evidence that it promotes quicker recovery from sports.

I definitely stand over glucosamine and cod liver oil for muscle / joint pain, they can usually be gotten very cheaply in Aldi / Lidl type places or occasionally on sale from Holland and Barrett

Unfortunately dietary supplements are unregulated,and you can make claims for them, which you would never get away with for a drug.
I am not going to dissect the information provided in the link http://www.iherb.com/ but it is a good example of this.

You can find an in-depth discussion of misleading claims for nutitional supplements elsewhere on boards, particularly the athletics forum.

I tried gluscosamine before for arthritis without any obvious improvement, or deterioration in the condition, once I abandoned the course.

The National Library of Medicine link (
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/807.html) referenced in the second link is authoritative and I trust the information provided there. Read it and make up your own mind.
It is likely to be effective for some types of arthritis but not as quick acting as ibuprofen and for only works for some people.

Also note the warnings for interaction, especially with warfarin - a very popular prescription - which www.iherb.com does not even mention.
