    That's a burglary not a robbery.

Why should student accommodation cover the cost of the items?

It's possible that the operators of the student accommodation have taken out insurance to cover all their tenants' property. Possible, but unlikely. Very, very, unlikely, not least because it would mean that those students who did not have a great many valuable and portable possession were subsidising the insurance for those who did.

The usual arrangement is that it's up to a tenant to insure his or her own property, and I don't see why that rule would be any different in student accommodation.

I'd be questioning what type of security they have on the premises if two people items got stolen and why all the camera's aren't working.

    SunnyDub1.
They have 24 hour security and cameras everywhere and they are waiting to see the camera's today when the man is back that can access them, but we not sure if all are working.
my sister saw 3 security men on that night and they weren't patrolling she said they were in there hut!!!!

Peregrinus: thanks for your reply, we will see what happens.

Zambia: no need to be smart if you have nothing to say to help me id rather you didnt post at all, we are distressed enough,,

( maybe they should at least brush up on there security if a student can kick in a door on the complex and gain access to all apartments, i dont think that is right..and they dont allow you to put on your own locks to be safe....

To be fair this is a legal discussions forum and not the Tea and Sympathy forum. The question of 'why should they cover it?' is a valid one. Assuming you are not looking for legal advice it seems you want a discussion on whether or not security was negligent?

I can't really answer that for you. I do know in practise though it's generally the best policy to personally insure your own items.

The security people will have set or random rounds, they have to tag into certain parts of the site during their shift. While they may have been in the hut when your sister dropped down, they are entitled to breaks, we have no idea what they did for the other 7 or 11 hours of their shift.

Usually the complex has public liability cover but it's up to each occupant to get renters insurance to cover their own property. Has your Sister read the documents she got when she took out the lease/moved in?

Can the college even offer cover on someone else's property? As I thought you needed an insurable interest in anything you want to insure and the college has no interest in students personal items.

Thieves have worked out a simple way to defeat cameras and there would be loads of people in and out of student accommodation.

What do you want the security do, search everyone in and out of the complex?

Burglaries are crap believe me I know I have seen enough of the effects of them for years.

You are 100% correct they should conduct a security review every time a burglary occurs. However your initial question was will student accommodation cover the cost of the laptop?

I asked you the simple question why you would think that they should. They did not kick the door in and take it.

The person that did that is the person who must in the end bear the cost of replacing it to you. Sadly we all know if he/she is caught they probably are broke so we dont bother chasing them for money.

Its civil litigation thing, don't target the guilty we target the ones who can pay us.

What you could try though is if the laptop was purchased on a credit card there may be some sort of insurance option there on purchases.

Thank you Zambia. And I apologise for being short with you before it's just we are upset over it but don't need tea and sympathy,

Now the cameras were looked over yesterday evening and there was couple people around her apartment but seemingly the cameras rotate and when the camera faced back around to face her apartment they didn't see anything but saw the lights on it apartment. Now they are checking other camera's in the hope that they may have caught something and weren't rotating aswell.

The student village office aren't being very helpful and still haven't fixed her front door and it happened last week as its not closing properly and I think it's all unfair as these are young girls and it could have been alot worse but I don't understand how the owners not helping them much.

If the cameras are not even working, isn't that negligence by the Student Accommodation? Was there damage done to the property?

Perhaps, but likely not. How would the burglers know they were not working?

If they were or were not how do they stop the theft? The events would have been the same.

The front door was damaged and they threw everything all around the apartment and then went into the bedrooms and took things from there and got some creams etc and through it all over the place and the walls and also took a wallet and cash. they must have went out the back door of apartment and when the girls arrived home the front and back door was open and every room door opened and all lights in apartment were on..and the place trashed.

Now there is other cameras that are around the area and my sister has asked security man to check all of them as they are all in view of her apartment and surely they weren't all revolving away from her apartment!

I just think the complex staff are not at all helpful to the girls as in moving them or fixing there door or coming to see the apartment or checking if they okay,. The guards wanted access to the cameras also when it happened that night and they were told on the night that only the main man can show them the cameras and he on holidays so he is back now and has viewed them himself the main camera but not the rest yet and think guards coming today to see them, hope no editing done.........
