    Hi Guys

Since Thursday last my sky box has been displaying a message sayin its not receiving a signal. I rang sky and they tried everything they could their end but to no avail. They suggested I ring the company that installed the box, which I have been doing also since thursday and they havent once picked up the phone. Gone beyond annoying at this stage!! Are there any engineers out there willing to have a look for me? Im in the dublin 15 area, hopefully somebody will know someone that can help :D

    Thanks!

Could be a number of things.
First thing to do is unplug the box , then remove all connections - reconnect , power on box and see if that has solved the problem. Otherwise its probably a dish alignment issue where you will need someone to align your satellite dish.

I tried all that, but its still displaying the same message. I live in an apartment block, but my neighbours sky is working ok. Could it still be an issue with the dish?

If your neighbours are getting their signal from the same dish then the fault is most likely at your end. Could you check the LNB IN connection. Sometimes these connections are not great and need to be redone , after that go to services - system setup- signal test and see what signal strength/quality you are getting.

The blue bars for both wires (I have 2 wires going into the back of the box, I believe new buildings only have one) are both completely blue. There is no signal being received at all. I have checked all connections at this stage, and nothing has worked :(

I should also add - this is a relatively new box. I only had it installed about 3/4 months ago.

ok well bearing in mind that your neighbours are on the same feed from the dish I would bet that your problem is a bad f-connector at your LNB IN port at the back of your sky box.
Is this a regular sky box or sky+ ?

    a sky+ HD box

In that case you should have two feeds coming in from the dish , can you try switching them over ?

Do you mean the wires in the back of the box? Swap those around?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭GoodisonPark

yes , the two cables with a hexagonal nut on the end , they will be connected to LNB1 and LNB2 on your sky box. While you are doing that just check that they look ok , no loose cable coming out of them.

no theres nothing loose on them, Ive been looking at them all weekend tryin to figure this out haha. Theyre almost impossible to loosen, they've been screwed on very tight. I have just left the apartment but I will try that as soon as I am back.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭GoodisonPark

They should be only hand-tight lol
If you cant get them off then you will need an 11mm spanner.
Switch them around, reboot the box and see what happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 90 ✭✭stargirl28

ok will do. From what I remember there was a spanner with the box when I received it from SKY which I should still have. Thanks a million for your help! Ill let you know how I get on with that when I get home

    Hey stargirl28!!
I had the same problem a few months back Sky couldn't figure it out, but me engineer said its probably the cable from the dish to the box! So i ran a new cable from the dish to the box and got full quality & strenght there was a tiny hole in the cable where water got inside the cable & destroyed it! Sounds very similar

Unfortunately I'm in an apartment block and its a communal dish. Therefore the dish is not easily accessible for me hence y I'm looking for an engineer. I tried everything suggested in this thread but nothing has worked. I contacted sky again tonite as the communications company they outsource apartment installation to (Finlay's) haven't answered their phones since Thursday!! I'm beyond annoyed at this stage but sky said they cn send an engineer out and charge me 100euro for the privilege :o, even thou its not my fault Finlay's aren't answering their phones. The guy in sky even tried ringin them a gud few times while I was left on hold and they didn't pick up. Gona be in touch with sky again in the Mornin and ill be goin higher. I refuse to pay!! Rant over haha. Anymore suggestions welcome :D

Threaten to cancel, they'll probably reduce the fee to a tenner

What number do you have for the engineer?
I just got Sky installed in my house 2 weeks ago and the guy left me a separate number for his company if anything happened in the next 30 days.
I can put the number on here in the morning if you want

If its a communal system, theres always the chance that the feed to your apartment has been disconnected, i've seen this happen when people gain access to the switch cabinet/comms and try to connect themselves.

That would be great if you could!! The number I was given is 0449343743. It's ringin out constantly.

Threatened to cancel and they weren't all that pushed by it!! I was with UPC and changed to sky as UPC were a nitemare. Can't win really!! Just surprised at sky as they generally have a gud reputation when it comes to customer service.

Thanks everyone!! I appreciate the comments / suggestions

That thought has also crossed my mind and there have bn alot of ppl movin in n out over passed few wks so it is possible but as mentioned I couldn't get near the dish unfortunately. I value my life :p wouldn't risk it haha. Hence the need for an engineer to look at it.

It is not the same issue, Stargirl28 is living in an apartment! Its a communal dish that she is using meaning all the cables run to a patch room which in turn are run out to individual apartments.

If the cables within the apartment. ie the ones coming from the wall plate and then going into the box are fine, then someone has possibly disconnected the cables in the patch room.

Check the wall plate f connector. If that is also fine (not loose coming apart) then contact whoever has the satellite maintenance contract for your complex and get them to sort the issue. You should contact the management agent to find out who they are. If you are renting, get on to your landlord and get him to sort it out.

That phone no. is for a company called Finlay Communications who are now in liquidation. You will probably need to get on to your property managers to see if they can contact their source in Sky to see what company,(if any), have taken over the maintenance of the building.
Do you have two cables coming into your apartment and then into the back of the box, or is it a single grey cable (fibre optic) going to a steel box & then 2 TV cables going to you sky box.?

My landlord fecked off to America a few months bak (another ongoing battle Im having at the moment as he left noone else in charge or as a point of contact!). I rang the mgt company and guess who they told me has the satellite contract etc...Finlays!!! Been tryin them again this morning and still no answer. Im about to ring SKY for the fourth time and let them have it. It is gone way beyond a joke at this stage!!! I checked all the above mentioned and nothing is loose.

I also tried that number (HIS Ltd) and I was told they dont hold the SKY contract anymore. That was the number I was first given by SKY when I got the box about 4 months ago....Thanks for that though!

You could try ringing the liquidator, I suppose. He might be able to steer you in the right direction...
Kieran McCarthy of Hughes Blake is the man. Phone 01-6699999

Finally!! After ALOT of coming n going and shouting and threatening them with consumer affairs SKY agreed to send out an engineer FOC :D...They werent even aware that Finlays went into Liquidation so kudos to homelink & Mountjoy mugger for pointing it out to me! They initially said they'd send someone out for free then the guy backtracked and denied saying it. So I asked to speak with a manager and basically kicked ass and low and behold there wil be an engineer out this thursday. Such an effort!! Anyway hopefully it will all be sorted this week (althou whats the bets they'll come out and cant fix it, O ye of little faith eh :p).....

Thanks to everyone for all the advise and help! I was starting to lose the plot :D

I would make sure they send out an engineer who is familiar with communal fibre optic systems, (your grey cable is fibre optic). Most domestic Sky engineers would not have come across this system as part of their normal routine. Your problem could simply be that the mains power operating the communal system is off or unplugged somewhere in the building. If there is a caretaker on site he/she may know where the power source is.

Sky employ installers not engineers. Why not email Finlays?
