When purchasing an image from Shutterstock, is the image then removed from the Shutterstock website, and do you then own the image? Or do you just purchase the right to use the image? (just thinking of a scenario where two similar companies happen to purchase the same image from shutterstock for a logo, resulting in identical logo's...)

My understanding is that you get non-exclusive royalty free access to the image.

5uspect is right, they can continue to sell the image. I think the idea is that you start from their image and customize it yourself to make it exclusive. I know a design co in Wexford that bought a logo image there and just added their company name below it for their logo. The same image is still available to purchase.

As above: you get to use the image but they still own it and can continue to sell non-exclusive rights to as many people as they like. Most image libraries will allow you to buy exclusive rights to an image but it's hugely expensive, be prepared to re-mortgage your house to pay for it!

    This.

The option is often available for you to buy exclusive use of the image, but this would only be done in extreme cases.
