I was out for a walk near Lagan Meadows (about 5-6 miles inland from Belfast harbour),when up pops a seal for a breather.
Is this roaming so far upstream common?

Have seen seals at the four courts bridge in Dublin. i presume they follow fish up rivers.

There were two in Lough Gill in Co Sligo some time ago, and several singles over the years. That's about three miles of river, through a busy town, under three bridges, over one weir, obviously not easily put off if they have their minds made up to go.

There was a seal rescued by TSPCA in Clonmel about 4 years ago.
Thats about 30 miles from the sea and about 10 miles from salt water.
He was sent to Dublin and made a full recovery and was released in Howth.

They are predating on Salmon and Trout in the river.
One seal can eat an awful lot of fish.
