Luas to Dart via UCD - Cycle and Pedestrian Route

DLR is currently developing a cycle and pedestrian route from Windy Arbour Luas Station to Booterstown Dart Station via UCD. This route forms part of the DLR Cycle Network and will provide excellent permeability for all users.

The route travels through a number of residential areas (Columbanus, Mulvey Park, Gledswood, Woodbine and Trimleston) and it should be noted that it is not proposed to alter or remove any parking in these areas. As per the recommendations in the National Cycle Manual the speeds and volumes of vehicles are sufficiently low that the installation of cycle lanes would not be warranted. It is proposed to install wayfinding signage at various points within these areas.

    link.

There's also the report and drawings.

It's a strange mix of a project. Some bits like raising the cycle lane above the road surface, widening the cycle lanes, moving cycle lanes closer to the road at junctions and constructing contra-flow cycle lanes are good ideas but there are a few "shared spaces" which IMHO makes it only useful for recreational cyclists and not for commuters.

Strange mix alright - I like the contra-flow lane from the Luas, but some of the stuff seems a bit strange - I hope that they're not going to spend tons of money on "upgrading" things that don't need upgrading.
The crossing at UCD will be upgraded to a toucan crossing to allow for cyclists to make the right turn into UCD.
 Why not just leave it as it is and allow cyclists to use the road to turn right into UCD?
Objective 8: Ensure proper integration between cycling and public transport.
What's the point in cycling to the DART station from the Luas station if you can bring your bike on neither, and there's no secure bike parking facilities at either?

Some of the Luas stops have bike lockers which I guess could be reasonably secure.

Booterstown station has both a sheltered bike lockup and proper secure lockers

I thought you could bring your bike on the Dart? I've been harassing the Luas people to follow suit ever since they announced it.

And ever since they ejected me from an empty Luas in winter 2010 because I had my bike.

I like the fact that in all the drawings, all the cars are Porsches!

I'm seeing bikes on rush-hour Darts quite frequently - Irish Rail don't seem to be enforcing the off-peak rule (at least not consistently)

Only looking at the drawing in detail now.

It includes an unreal amount of shared use at crossing etc -- even where there's no space issue whatsoever, like at the N11.
