Dog bedding

My 2 dogs share a fine big timber kennel. It has a felt roof but a wide open door.

Now I put an off cut of carpet in yesterday. I tacked it down and even put timber around the edge and screwed it down. The sh"ts unbelievably managed to obliterate it regardless.

I wanted to avoid straw, but that's what's gonna have to go in... Or shredded paper.

No matter what goes up to shield the door/ warm the inside, it's wrecked it minutes. But I don't want them to freeze either.

Any suggestions? I'm even considering a heat lamp mounted up high over the run!

use the door to block the draft only left open enough for the dogs to get In/out. We had our dogs left sleeping on timber and it never bothered them or they weren't too cold. Bedding is an absolute disaster when it gets wet from rain or when the dog goes in as it absorbs and holds moisture.
If you were still concerned you could throw jackets on the dogs on the really bad nights.

My grandfather also has really piece of heavy duty rubber as a flap. Theres enough give for the dog to push it in and out but its not something the dogs ever tried to chew like the lighter stuff.

You can try saw dust aswell i find that straw tends to give the dogs a lot of fleas

The rubber or even stripes of rubber sounds like a good idea for the door.

One option for the floor might be to get a sheet of high density insulation. Cut it to size and use fibreglass to protect it. you can use a type of paint finish over the fibreglass (like the inside of a lake boat) to give a good finish that is hard and easy to clean.

I use a bag called an FIBC its the one's you get sand or gravel in just fold it over an lay it in the Dog Kennel they will pull at it to move it around the Kennel and this works for mine

use wood shavings from a local" horsey shop" 7euro a bail .keeps the springers spotless and smelling of pine :D:D. bit messy do as it works its way out of the box but its easy to sweep up (not like shreded paper) then its used for mulch under the trees ;);)

you see that stuff your dogs have all over their body. . . hmm hair i think it is? that's all the bedding they need. once they are not on cold/wet concrete they will be fine. i have raised scaffold boards in my dog house and that's what they sleep on. the door is just wide enough for them to go through so that cut's out the draft.

i have tried all bedding down through the years and no matter what i used they dragged it out all over the yard. the worst is that shredded paper, you'll be weeks trying to sweep it up. once your dogs have a full belly they'll be more than warm enough.
