Okay, I'm in first year, in arts, but a big problem. I only managed to go to two days of lecturers, I've been out sick in hospital since then, so this Tuesday, it's been a month since I've been in college.
I've sent all my certs in to the college, so I'm covered that way, but, doctors have said it could be another two to three weeks at least before I'm back.
I've tried keeping up with stuff on moodle, but it's been pretty impossible, I've been feeling pretty crap.
Is there any point in going back after missing potentially, six weeks, or should I just defer until next year, or would it be easy enough for me to catch up on everything?
Getting pretty worried about it now!

Hi there. Sorry to hear yo have been unwell. Hope you recover soon. I'm repeating first year (3 modules) as we had a baby with six weeks of semester left. My other half had to go back to work 3 days after the baby was born so I became full time dad. I thought I could keep up with notes from friends/moodle etc. Alas, but nay. I missed far too much. If I were in your shoes, I'd defer but of course I say that with the benefit of hindsight.

It depends what subjects you're doing within arts. It's very possible that you could catch up :)

I'm doing geography, English and Irish.

Best idea is to have a talk with your lecturers. It'd be fine if it was all just based on the end of semester exam, cos you could just catch up, but if you've missed lots of continuous assessment then you might be stuck for marks. However if you have all your sick certs etc so your lecturers know you are legit and not a waster, I'm sure you'll be able to work out something.
Have a think about it. It'd be a shame to have to defer the year because of sickness, but at the same time if you deferred til next year you'd have a much better stab at it and likely get much better grades.

If you've an ongoing illness, you should maybe get in touch with the access office - they might be able to help you out. They include it under their remit, it's not for people with disabilities/SLDs.

Best thing to do is get in touch with your departments anyways. You could maybe organise to sit your semester 1 exams in the summer to have a bit more time to prepare. I know from first hand experience that the English and geography departments are really, really helpful when it comes to stuff like this. haven't studied Irish so don't know about them but I assume they'd be similar.

    Get well soon!

I also advice that you get in touch with the Academic Advisory office and explain your situation. They may be able to help you if you need to defer for personal reasons etc.

If you've tried all of the above and that doesn't work, contact the Welfare Officer in the Student Union.
