    DM800 HD or a Vu+ Solo perhaps?

I'd think it's probably handiest sticking with Enigma, as it's very popular with lots of support, etc.

Cheapest option non enigma based would be an openbox/skybox, but if you have the extra few quid you can't go wrong with the Dreambox, and as Byte says, probably the best support out there for any box.

Not really bothered about bells and whistles, just something HD that'll run cccam without giving hassle.

    What's the Openbox S9 like?

its grand for 2nd box, not as main box. Epg is now and next only on 28.2. Channel layout is sh1t also. Get a dm800 and you will be sorted.

    Thanks for the advice, but...

...what do you mean by that? It's hard to edit, or...?

You can load a premade channel list but it's still very slow and unresponsive. There's no plugins for the openbox either. Save the extra few bob and get the dm800, they are much better. I have both and the s9 is cheap and when you compare you can see why.

General unresponsiveness is a problem with the S9 then?

I'm a bit loathe to get a DM800 because of complexity (not for me, for the end user).

Any opinions on the Ferguson Ariva boxes?

Nothing complex about DM800 anymore. Install openpli image, Install Autobouquets plugin and the dreambox will auto update any channel changes on an optional Daily/weekly/monthly basis. Also install Crossepg from plugin feeds for 7 day epg.
Another option cheaper is Vu + Solo. operates same as DM800, Except install openvix image.

S9 and Ariva require manual channel tuning and have no 7 day epg.

Because of the price of original dreambox I would personally recommend the clone. The latest build, ie M tuner upwards are fine. Likewise for 50 euro extra the dm800se is a nice purchase. Faster boot time.

satboxes or mixeshop are all fine. Allow for customs on the latter....

Being an owner of the vu solo clone. I'd go with that all day long. The information had a dm clone before and it was awful. Just wouldn't drive my dish

    Cough check sig cough
