Smoke coming from under bonnet of BMW 320i

    As the title says there has been smoke coming from under the bonnet of my BMW 320i for the last few days. The car is a 06 model and the smoke only comes when the car is stopped ... never while driving.

    Any ideas what could be causing this?

    Would it be steam maybe, and you don't notice it when driving?

    Either way, I wouldn't be driving the car until you know what's wrong with it.

    No definitely not steam ... it's smoke.

    I have to drive the car as I'm living in the middle of nowhere.

    Does it smell of oil? Do you get the smell through the air vents?

    Mine is an 01, 325ci and the rocker cover gasket is leaking at the minute, which means that drops of oil will leak and burn off on the hot engine, which results in small amounts of smoke coming from the rear of the engine bay, it smells of oil, and there isn't excessive amounts.

    If it's the same issue then the rocker cover gasket will need replacing I reckon, best to take it to a mechanic if you're not sure.

    The symptoms sound similar to what mine is doing at the minute, but there's no way I can know if yours is the same being honest.

    Yes and yes.

    Sounds like the same gasket issue you have. Two questions ... is it ok to drive short (25km) distances today and tomorrow ... and how much is it likely to cost to fix?

    Depends how bad it is really, mine has been doing it on and off for 3 weeks or so, and I've driven maybe 200 miles.

    It's really hard to gauge whether or not you should drive it, I'd hate to tell you yes and for it to end in tears.

    Check your oil level before doing anything, if you have to drive i'd take it very handy.

    My car only does it when I give drive it relatively hard, like heading up steep inclines or just giving it the beans:D, so I've been driving my car as normal the last while.

    As for price, I'm not sure, I'm doing mine myself next weekend hopefully, or sooner weather permitting! Parts so far have come to around 50 quid or so, so it's labour on top of that. All that being said, I presume yours is the newer shape? And not like my 01 model, which means you have a different engine, so it's hard to say how hard/costly it is being honest.
