Relationship Breakdown: Legal Implications

My cousin and his partner seem to be going their separate ways. The house in which they lived together is solely in his name, as is the quite substantial mortgage associated with the property. They have three young children.

Yesterday my cousin arrived home to discover that much of the furniture from the house had been removed, all of which had been jointly purchased. He does not have any way of proving that he contributed to the cost of the furniture, but neither does she.

As someone with no experience of this type of scenario, I would be interested to hear from people who are familiar with the legal implications of this seemingly definitive split.
