Lads can anyone shed some light, anytime I try to startup my laptop it goes to a screen with windows error recovery, but I can't get past it, just keeps returning to it. It's a dell Inspiron with windows 7 if that makes any difference, started happening the last few days, sometimes it would come on but now it won't at all.

Theirs a Recovery partition builtin in to Laptop Harddrives, good few models of Inspirion so not sure what button to press to access it on yours, try hitting F8 or F12 repeatedly on turning on Laptop to access it.

If theirs nothing on the Laptop you want to keep then look for factory reset option, if their is then look for a repair option.

If their is no repair option then you could download Ubuntu or something similar and access your stuff using that.

Could also try booting into safe mode before the above to get any stuff you want off it, might work, the option for this is accessible through an F button as well, F2 maybe.

May have picked up a virus or your HDD could be on the way out, who knows why it won't start.

F8 to choose Safe Mode :) F2 is for BIOS setup.

Ah right, sound, I googled it for inspirion, holding down 0 before pressing power button (hadn't seen that before) and other multi button combos:rolleyes: were some first page results so wasn't sure.

Edit, OP if you want to check your HDD status download and run vivard.

    +1 for vivard :)

F8 is standard for any Windows based machines and F12 for boot sequence options (set in BIOS)
