Which tyre brand???

Been a while since I bought tyres but I now need two of them. I'm replacing Michelins which were the original tyre. Size 215/50R17.

Phoning around I'm getting quoted for loads of different makes and prices are ranging from €70 up to €250 per tyre. The cheaper tyres i.e. €70 are no name Chinese made tyres, around €140 for Hankook, €180 for Bridgestone and the Michelins are at the top of the price range.

Am I wrong to discard the cheap Chinese ones? IMO, the tyres are what my life could depend upon so I'm dubious about the Chinese tyres, especially at that price. However I'm not flush at the moment so can't afford the Michelins.

Any advice on a brand and where to buy in the north Kildare/Dublin/Trim areas?

    Thanks

    No.

Hankook can be quite good, I had them on a new Mondeo years ago (2005), factory fit back than, decent brand to be fair. Great value imo.

A 225x45x17 is a more common size and might be cheaper.
The cheapest place I've found for quality tyres is discount tyres in Blanchardstown, even cheaper than buying online, ask for Keith.

I just ordered 4 x 215/45/17 Goodyear Eagle F1 for €520 including fitting, balancing and tracking. Tis a local tyre place in Cork City. Don't think it's a common size though?

    What are they going on?

Unless you have a high performance car the Hankooks should be a great allrounder and more than do the job competently.

If you do want the Michelin then you can get 4 here:
http://www.camskill.co.uk/m54b0s305p69513/Michelin_Tyres_Car_Michelin_Primacy_HP_-_215_50R17_95V_XL_TL_ for around €780 delivered, add another €60 for local fitting and balancing, even with the exchange rate it comes in alot less than €1k you are being quoted for the 4.

While we are on the subject I was disappointed with the Vredstreins for a finish. I had about 25k kms on them and they burst one by one. The sidewalls just seem to break down for some reason..

As Neil says 225/45 17 is a much cheaper size so you may be able to change from your current size.

You can get a set of 225/45 17 Michelins for €500 fitted.

Click on anything thats remotely Chinese sounding (hint: all on the bottom of the page) and check the actual user ratings yourself. Then go buy something else.

Give these a call if your around Trim, I found them the cheapest last winter when I was looking for four. Got four Bridgestone at € 85 each, but they are 16, so 17 would be more. The same tyre in Kilcock was €120.
