Programmes for blocking certain sites

Noob question I know, but I literally haven't used any blocking software in years

I need to block the usual sites for a kids laptop, and on another laptop, block gambling / game websites

What's the best software to use?

Paid or free, doesn't matter

I would consider a DNS based solution. It's less overhead on the local box.

From previous threads I remember k9 came recommended as a category based filter.

K9 is excellent, it actually uses cloud based definitions so is constantly up to date

Win 7 has some excellent inbuilt parenting tools that are worth having a look at. I use it to create a games account that has K9 on it and games, and a unpassworded education account that blocks everything except educational programmes and websites. So far it works a treat. You can also block access to the computer at certain times i.e at night etc.
