with the laws governing the ownership of swords ... what is the current requirments to import/own a katana ... i have heard that exceptions have been made were the owner can show a valid reason for the owner ship of the sword but it is upto the local garda to decide weather or not to inforce this ... mind you my granfather had an item he used for trimming busshes that wouldnt have looked out of place in the hands of a chinese foot man faceing the mongol hoard

mind you i probably wouldnt be asking this question if an add for katana's hadnt been placed on my last thread. thanks btw some cool stuff on that site

as far as im aware the exceptions under the act are if the katan meets the following requirments

by inserting, after paragraph (q), the following paragraph:
“(r) the sword sometimes known as samurai or katana, other
    than such a sword—
    (i) made before 1954, or
(ii) made at any other time according to traditional methods
    of making swords by hand.”.
