Spare Key (cut) question

Hey i just bought a used opel astra and it came with only one key. The key has electronic opening on it but its not working so i just open the car as normal. I presume i just need to replace the battery on that one. To get a spare key with electronic opening how would i go about that? Are they expensive. Or is it not worth it and do i just get a regular key cut and keep it for back up?

    Thanks.

to copy the key with memory for immobilisor bring to nearly any heel repair shop as they normally have Key cutter as 2nd business line , normally €20 will sort

as for replacing battery, you might need to reprogram it to the car, PM me for help as you don't always need Opel computer to do.. there is a cheat way

Not sure i follow, it's €20 to get an immobiliser copied in a key shop but to change the battery you need an opel computer??

I presume it means €20 to get the key cut...

But to get it coded, you may need the main dealer. That won't be cheap.

I got a spare key coded in Timpsons a few weeks ago in Newbridge, it was €40

In reference to getting the original key a new battery, sometimes when you take out the battery and replace it, the key has to be resynched to the car as it loses it's programming.

Do i need to get a battery for the original key before i can get a spare one coded? Or can i just get it copied without the battery and use that as the main? That sounds too easy though i'm assuming not?

    thanks for the replies btw

If the original key is currently opening the car and shutting off the immobiliser then it should be fine to be copied

That's the thing it isn't. I have to physically turn the key. There is no life left in electronics. I'll bring it to the key shop and just see what they reckon. Thanks

If the original key is starting the car then it is shutting off the immobiliser?

Electronic opening is not the same as the immobiliser

Sorry, I'm new at this driving lark. :) So i can get a spare key cut now from my current original key. But it won't unlock doors via button unless i go to Opel dealer about it, correct?

    Not quite

You can get a spare key cut and programmed from the original key in any locksmiths or shoe repair shop who have a machine who can read the immobiliser codes.

Your remote locking isn't working, and you may need to replace the battery in your original key to get it working.

However if you replace the battery in your original key, then you may need to get that reprogrammed as replacing the battery can cause the programming of the key to the car to fail.

Your car manual will actually tell you if this is the case, just find the section in the manual about your key and changing the battery in it.

    Does that make sense now?

I dont have the manual - I searched online but could only find one for a 2012 model.

When you say i can get a key cut and programmed from the key shop do you mean it will open the locks electronically too or it's just coded for immobiliser?

if it's the former the battery in the original wouldn't be an issue as i can use the new one as a spare right? Sorry about this, coming across as quite the idiot!

    Don't worry you're fine :)

If you get a key cut in the key shop it will switch off the immobiliser, it won't open the doors remotely, that's different technology in the key.

You'd have to go a a main dealer to get a second key that would have remote central locking as far as I know :)

Post up the model and year of your car and someone on here might know if you need to get the original key reprogrammed when you replace the battery.

    Try this:

Astra key reprogramme. Insert the key into the ignition, turn to the final stage before engine start. Press and hold the door lock button, doors will lock and unlock, turn key back, remove. Key is reset to car, locking should work.

Had similar problems with a '98 Astra D, could reset the key but never got the locking issue sorted. Be interested to see how you get on.

For more serious resets, there is a red master key too I think, you might need to have access to that and it seems you don't have it.

    Hey guys,

Came across this thread as I'm in need of spare car key. Nothing fancy, just a plain old one like the ones from days gone by. Doesnt have to unlock doors with buttons or anything. Is this possible to get? Any idea of price? Thanks
