I have a grid aerial that I have accidentally broken off the balun. My question is this aerial of any use without the balun. It is a couple of years old and the balun just seemed to snap off when I opened it to check the cable. The problem now is I have nothing to connect the cable to.

No its time for a new one,its aluminum so no way to solder it. Even if you did it will break again when it gets windy. A new one will set you back around E30.

You can use screw terminal block, or tie-wrap coax outer and inner to the middle of the feed and loop the coax into 4 turns about 10cm diameter near the aerial, just behind reflector, as primitive Balun as a short term solution.

That's the bunny. It's a good idea to have a loop like that on ALL aerial installs near the aerial. As long as ties don't press into cable and loop isn't too tight (damages screen) it always helps. Dramatically reduces voltage spike when there is lightning a few 100m away (nothing helps for a direct strike).

Put it just behind reflector with short "tail" to the feed point
