Can I replace the spring in my Mixer tap?

I cant get the water to flow through the shower head off my tap.

When I lift the spring loaded square knob the water goes from the bath taps to the shower head, but then when I let go,the knob/spring shuts closed and the water goes back to comming out of the tap instead.Even with both hot and cold on together, the spring loaded knob wont stay open and allow the water to come out of the shower head.

So what the problem here,is it too strong/stiff a spring?
Or am I just thick and not doing something right here?

If it is a stiff spring, then can it be replaced for a softer spring,or do I need to get a complete new tap set?

    Thanks.:)

Right, after a bit of prodding and poking around with a spanner and vice grips,I found out that the spring loaded mixer knob unscrews out of the main tap body.

So is it a case of cutting the spring down a bit or can I get a softer spring in a plumbing shop like CDV or Davies bathrooms??

    Thanks.:)
