Brakes squeaking and rumbling

Noticed over the last few days the car was squealing a bit when braking, and there was a bit of rumbling the last day or two.... Thing is, the back brake pads were changed about 14k miles ago so it shouldn't be them. I also heard it wouldn't be the front ones as the warning light should come on for those (although it could be a bulb gone)... Not sure though and it's hard to hear if it's coming from front or back.

    Any advice?

    Get them checked out !
You cant ever go by when they where last changed. and indicators are never to be trusted when you hear or feel something wrong.

You might need to look at the discs they could be worn down and need changing
I hope this helps you make a sensible and safe choice

Oh I fully intend to get a man to look at them at the weekend, just wondering if anyone had any ideas of anything else it might be?

Also, roughly how much would I be looking at for a change of brake pads or a change of discs and pads? Independent mechanic.

14k miles or K/ms. Even then the mileage isn't the biggest deciding factor as most of that could be motorway with little braking or city rush hour with lots of braking. Could anything have gotten stuck in like a pebble or some dust blow in at them?

If you take the wheel off and inspect the pads. If you have a socket set just loosen the nuts and take it off, taking care not to damage the hose etc give it a blow or a gentle brushing. You won't need a wind back kit or anything to put the pads back on unless you are replacing them with new pads.

14k miles. 75% of that I'd guess was motorway driving, so I'd imagine they shouldn't be worn yet... Could be grit I suppose as was on poor roads lately!

Will take your advice on opening the wheel and having a look but to be honest apart from a major defect I don't think I'd really know that much from looking at it, not the most mechanically minded...:o

I know what ya mean but it really wouldn't hurt to take a look and see if anything has gotten caught between the pad and disc. Should be just a couple of nuts to loosen, take it off have a gander at it and put it back on. A good mechanic might do a quick job of taking it off and blowing some compressed air onto it to clear debris and ask for a tenner or so or nothing at all just to have you come back to him in future with work.

That's true I suppose! I know the fella reasonably well so I'm sure he wouldn't rip me off anyway! Will give him a shout Saturday and see!

    Thanks for the advice!

Should it be pads/discs, anyone have any idea how much it'd be?

If it's just dust or grit it should be cleaned with no problems. Unless it's something really bad that's damaging the disc, it shouldn't need to be changed. The price of the pads if needed will depend on what pads you need to get. I know for my car a set of genuine pads will cost in the region of €100 but I get spurious/aftermarket pads which cost me €30 - €40 and I fit them myself. If he changed them before recently enough it'll cost you around about the same as last time I guess.

I'd say it's most likely just a bit of dust/road debris trapped in between but of course it needs to be checked to be sure. 14k miles depending on how hard you brake etc is prob on the low side for most people for changing brake pads but again many factors come into play for how long a set of pads will last. Harsh braking, long braking, frequent braking etc just so many variables that differ from driver to driver and of course the quality of the pads themselves.

Meant to ask you, what's the year, make and model of the car. Easiest way to have a look and see a decent price range for brake pads online etc. Tho don't expect them to cost exactly the same from the mechanic as what you see on some websites it should go without saying. There's a recent thread where a guy thinks he's being ripped of by his mechanic cos he's getting charged for a main dealer part and labour but he can source an aftermarket part for 80 dollars etc even tho he didn't know the source of the problem or how to diagnose it etc.

Car is an 04 VW Bora. Didn't cost anything to change them the last time as it wasn't long after buying it and was within my 6 month warranty! :D

Will have a look around anyway and see, thanks!

what engine size, petrol or diesel. When did you buy it if you don't mind my asking. Just to get an idea of when the pads were last changed.

Also just a quick edit that I don't know much about Boras but I'm sure others here could prob chip in with knowledge about them.

It's a 1.9 tdi. Bought it August 2011, was about December when they were changed I think!

I had my discs done 70 euro each brake pads where 40 try and find a kwik fit they are very good !
I had allot of grit in between my brake/disk over a period of about six months sometimes it doesn't take much to open a gap and if left **** will always grind them down unless cleaned out.
You should see marks on the disc if worn or they might be thin !!!
