    Hi

I am currently on the dole and job seeking...but I have a question..

Once I get a job, I am aware I will have to sign off. But is there anything in place that would support me until I would get my first pay check?

I know I don't even have a job yet lol, I'm just curious!

I think the community welfare officer can give some sort of payment to tide you over but its at their discretion.

nope, i was on jobseekers benefit for about 5 weeks last year. started my job the same week the staff in there got paid (monthly pay) and signed off that day, so had to go 5 weeks without any income. my advice to you would be play dumb and sign off the day before your first months wages come in.

    Useless advice.

Once you sign off that it's OP. But if you get a job perhaps you could borrow some money from someone to help you out until that first cheque comes in?

Well see, I kind of wanted to avoid borrowing from family etc if possible....

    Thanks for the advice guys!

An option yes, but as I'm actively applying for jobs I might not have enough time to save! Also, 144 per week hardly makes ends meet as it is, I'm lucky if I have €10 left at the end if the week!

I used to think that... But even on full-time minimum wage I could well over double what I get now, so I'm much better off to be employed!

in some cases this is right, looking for work at moment, most jobs €8.65 a hr
39 hrs, €337, less tax, travel to work, i am on €372 and i struggle on this!
i know you can claim FIS, but 4/5 months waiting for it!

Some jobs have a kitty you could borrow from and pay back over the course of a couple of weeks.
When I went from weekly pay to monthly, they offered some money to tide me over.

Also, you wouldn't need to borrow a lot from family/friends - just enough to tide you over - enough to bridge the back week.

Yes, if its a weekly paying job I should be fine, a little worried if its monthly!

Well I would see anything that would help bring someone off the dole and get back into the workforce to be a far better idea than remaining on the dole which is neither good for the person's self-esteem or the economy.

Seeing as the OP is already looking forward to getting a job and isn't content to just sit back and do nothing I'd see that as a good sign. Some people are just naturally more pro-active I guess.

Apply for two weeks holidays in the dole office and tell them you'll be working after that.

You could approach the Community Welfare officer BEFORE you sign off, explain the situation and ask for an advance which you will pay back once you get your first wages. Its at their discretion, but they might go for it.

Or you could ask for a 2 week advance on your salary from the new job. Whether or not you get this will depend on how big the place is and what their payroll department are like.
