Sandstone Fireplace - clean & seal?

    We have a really dirty cream stone (sandstone i think) fireplace which I would like to clean and then seal.

    I have cleaned it before with small success just with household cleaner and a scrubbing brush. I would like to do a more thorough job this time and then seal it with a good stone sealer. We've tried sanding it before also which turned out a bit patchy (this fireplace has been through a lot :o )

    Can anyone recommend a make of cleaner/sealer - I found the name of Aquamix Sealer's Choice via google, anybody tried this? It's quite expensive on Amazon £39.99.

    Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated! :)
